About Us
Nambour Meals on Wheels Inc. is a community based not for profit organisation that supports and enhances the independence of the aged, younger people with disabilities and their carers by the provision of nutritious meals which are delivered to their homes. Clients also benefit from a caring visit which provides a link with a community concerned for the wellbeing of its citizens. We are “more than just a meal”. The service enables clients to remain living in their own home, where they are most comfortable, promotes their wellbeing and allows them to maintain independence and quality of life.
Our
Story
The service commenced in early 1971 when community members identified the need for a meal delivery service to the aged and infirm people in the Nambour area and surrounds. A committee was formed by the combined churches in Nambour and the first delivery was on the 4th October 1971. 21 meals were prepared and delivered from the Church of England Hall that day. At the time, the service operated three days a week delivering 60 meals each week. Recipients were charged 40c per meal. Nambour Meals on Wheels was the one of the first of its kind in the Sunshine Coast region with many to follow.
In the late 1970’s land was leased from the Maroochy Shire Council and a kitchen was erected with the help of Rotary and Apex Club volunteers.
The committee of Combined Churches continued to run the service until the number of meals required became too much for them to manage.
In 1984 a public meeting was called to elect a committee from the local community. After this meeting, the name of the service was changed to Nambour Meals on Wheels Service Inc. By 1991 the service had expanded and was operating 5 days per week. At this time fundraising commenced to raise money to build an extension to the building. Thanks to the generosity of the Nambour and District community the extension was erected and officially opened May 1992.
In the Financial Year 2020/2021, Nambour Meals on Wheels delivered over 34,000 meals and provided a service to over 300 clients. The service continues to grow and expand.
